Retaining walls are structures designed to withstand earth pressure loads where unnatural slopes are required e.g. deep excavations. There are two main types: continuous and discontinuous walls.
Discontinuous walls consist of regularly spaced deep foundation elements e.g. driven h-pile or cast-in-place concrete piles that are installed prior to the excavation commencing; these are called soldier piles. As excavation begins, lagging is placed between the soldier piles to support the earth. This process of excavating and shoring is repeated until the desired depth of the excavation is achieved.
Continuous walls can be constructed with sheet piles, secant piles, precast walls, diaphragm walls or using soil mixing.
