Water Supply Pump House - Keephills 3 Expansion

Water Supply Pump House - Keephills 3 Expansion
Date: 2009

Client EPCOR / TransAlta was expanding the Water Supply Pumphouse as part of their expansion of the Keephills 3 Power Generating Plant in Keephills, Alberta. The $2-billion project required a new water intake and AGRA Foundations Limited was contracted to install the sheet piles extending into the cooling water pond . Ground conditions on site were of very stiff silty clay with sand layers, underlain by extremely weak, medium to fine grained sandstone .

Solution:

The AGRA team used a crane and diesel hammer to install the sheet piles to a depth of approximately 10 m. A walkway was built out above the water and a boat was also used by crew members in order to properly set the template piles and sheet piles, which had to extend from the shore into the cooling water pond.
