Date: 2012

The Agrium Western Events Centre, a brand new venue in downtown Calgary, opened just in time for the 2014 Calgary Stampede, despite flooding throughout the area during the construction process.
The $42.5-million facility includes a 2,500 seat arena and a 1,850 m2 (20,000 ft2) exhibit space. General contractor Ledcor Construction contracted AGRA for the foundation portion of the project, with works starting in the late summer of 2012. Ground conditions on site were challenging with saturated sand and dense gravel overlying the bedrock.

The high ground water table in the granular material and sloughing conditions on site called for a mixture of CFA piling and traditional casing up to 10 m depths for the installation of 221 bored concrete piles. Concrete was placed in piles via a tremie pipe inserted to the base of the pile. AGRA employed up to three drill rigs simultaneously – two traditional CIP rigs and one SR 80 in CFA mode – to allow for efficient production despite challenging ground conditions.
